If my house is leaking, what's happening in the Bajo Lempa?
The rain has not relented. I arrived in the midst of Tropical Storm Agatha. I did not even know that there was a tropical storm until I landed in a sheet of raindrops so thick, we could hardly see the road in front of us. The house I was moving into had flooded, particularly in what was to be my room, so I crashed at Danielle’s for the night. The next day as my new housemates showed me around and as we finished the last of the clean up, we reflected that frustrating as the flooding had been, we live in a house with tile floors and a very sound structure. Many Salvadorans live in much less stable buildings, and some even in houses of cardboard. Indeed, the president called a state of national emergency. Many communities had to be evacuated due to flooding and landslides.
Fortunately, government agencies and communal emergency response committees responded quickly, reflecting organizing work and lessons learned since Hurricane Ida in November. However, such a downpour at the beginning of the rainy season is unheard of. Many Salvadorans point to climate change as the cause, especially as the rains continue as never before. Normally a sign of relief for farmers, the rains now hold a constant threat. In the lower region of the Lempa river, this threat is especially potent, as the levies that held the river back in this low-lying region were split open during Agatha, due to the high volume of water released by the dam upstream.
Exactly a month later I returned from orientation with VMM just after Tropical storm Alex oversaturated El Salvador once again. Then a few days ago when I got up, a pool of water awaited me in front of the fridge, fruit of the persistant rains. Later that day I learned that the Bajo Lempa had flooded again, and the government declared a yellow alert. We shall see what the coming months hold, but it appears that many farmers will have extreme difficulty growing their crops this year.
